This week, Donald Trump announced that the US would recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and pledged to move the US embassy there. This unilateral move breaks with a global consensus and past US positions, and constitutes a flagrant violation of international law. While previous US administrations have refrained from accepting Israel’s sovereignty over Jerusalem in its entirety, long-standing US diplomatic and military support for Israel has played a role in enabling the ongoing colonization of the city.
