From the 17-21 June 2019, the Department of Culture, Politics, and Society (CPS) of the University of Turin organizes the sixth edition of the summer school TOMidEast with Iraq Observatory as media partner.
The success of the previous editions in terms of participation of students and professionals from all over the world pushed the Department CPS to renew its commitment with a new edition entitled Identity in the Middle East and North Africa: actors, strategies, and dynamics. The aim of this new edition is to critically reflect on identities and their politicization exploring the role they have played through time and space to read and represent political events in the region. Identity will be therefore used to frame relevant themes such as class issues, minority status, the formation of the state, sectarianism, language and gender issues, among others.
TOMidEast is the first Summer School in Italy and in Europe focused on the MENA region with a polititological perspective, as conceived by its scientific coordinator, Dr. Rosita Di Peri.
Video projections and debates will enrich the classes taught in English by International scholars; for this sixth edition confirmed their participation Gilbert Achcar (SOAS), Adam Hanieh (SOAS), Tamirace Fakhoury (Lebanese American University), May Darwich (Durham University), Bassel Salloukh (Lebanese American University), Raymond Hinnebusch (St. Andrews University), Francesco Cavatorta (Laval University), Carine Lahoud Tatar (St. Joseph University), and Morten Valbjørn (Aarhus University).
The school is primarily addressed to Master and Ph.D. students as well as professionals interested to understand the political dynamics of the Middle Eastern region.
For international students, we will offer ten scholarships covering the cost of accommodation.
