Ramadan breakfast in Tahrir Square celebrates `third wave of revolution,` upholds demand for President Morsi`s removal.
Several thousands gathered in Cairo`s Tahrir Square on Friday for a communal Ramadan breakfast to show their support for the 3 June ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi.
Under the banner "Protecting the gains of the revolution," several political groups – including the anti-Morsi Rebel campaign, the 30 June Front and the Egyptian Popular Alliance – have endorsed Friday`s Tahrir Square gathering.
The 6 April Youth Movement released a statement saying that its members would be participating at the event to uphold the demands of what they described as the "revolution`s third wave."
The group was referring to the movement in 2011 against former president Hosni Mubarak, the subsequent movement against military rule, and the third movement that ousted Morsi.
The Friday Ramadan breakfast is meant to celebrate the 30 June uprising in which millions of Egyptians took to the streets to demand early presidential elections, prompting the army to oust Morsi and impose a political roadmap in coordination with opposition groups.
The Qasr El-Dobara Church, located near Tahrir Square and known for its role in treating the injured during Cairo`s many post-revolution clashes, provided the Ramadan breakfast with dining tables.
The Tahrir breakfast is expected to be followed by the performance of evening prayers and an artistic performance.
Since Egypt`s 25 January 2011 revolution, a number of Ramadan breakfasts and other events have been held in the iconic square.
Dozens of protesters are also gathered at the Ittihadiya presidential palace, another site known for anti-Morsi demonstrations.
Meanwhile, a mass pro-Morsi demonstration is currently taking place outside the Rabaa Al-Adawiya Mosque in Cairo`s Nasr City – where a Ramadan breakfast is also being held – to demand the ousted president`s reinstatement.
