Khalid Albaih is a Sudanese cartoonist who shot to international fame in 2011, when one his drawings predicting the fall of the Middle Eastern authoritarian regimes went viral after the start of the Tunisian revolution. His cartoons have struck a chord with young revolutionaries from Egypt to Yemen. In his interview with SAMAR, he talks about the role of cartoonists in society, and the importance of the Internet in fostering debate.

Highlights from Sharjah Biennial 12 Open Week

Beginning with March Meeting 2014 and continuing through March Meeting 2015, Sharjah Biennial 12: The past, the present, the possible (SB12) shows works by over fifty artists and cultural practitioners from more than twenty-five countries. The exhibition, series of performances and screening program opened on March 5 in various venues across the emirate, including the Sharjah Art Foundation`s buildings, a rundown chicken restaurant known as `The Flying Saucer" and an abandoned salt factory in the city of Kalba on the Gulf of Oman. Over two-thirds of participating artists present new works and commissions. The biennial is conceived by Eungie Joo with associate curator Ryan Inouye.
